New Venture: Edgewater Collective

Ever since we moved to Edgewater, Colorado we have seen our small, one mile by one mile city as our “mission field.” We enrolled our daughters in our neighborhood school and began to network and build relationships. As we did this, we noticed a number of different needs in the community.

All three schools in Edgewater are Title I schools and over 85% of the students are on free or reduced lunch. The test scores are lower than those in the suburbs but they are improving. The teachers and staff are excellent yet some in the community just look at test scores and the schools suffer a bad rap. So I decided to network with other community leaders are start a project called Support Edgewater Schools to improve the image of our local schools and rally Edgewater around our schools.  Read the rest of this entry

The Ministry Value of Proximity

A normal day begins with walking our daughters to school just down the street from our duplex. At school I see my bartender whose son is in my daughter’s class. I see members of our Community Group who work at the school or are dropping their kids off at school. Then I walk a little over a mile to work at church. In the afternoons I work from home or at a local coffee shop a few blocks from our house. Then I pick up our daughters from school with my wife. Then I close off the afternoon with a run around a beautiful lake just down the road from our house.

Most of my work and family life happens within a one mile radius of our house.

I am beginning to realize that one of the most strategic values of ministry life is proximity. Read the rest of this entry

Stories of Shalom

What are the needs within your city? Within your neighborhood? There are needs all around us whether we live in urban, suburban or rural areas. God calls us to seek shalom where he has placed us (Jeremiah 29:7).

Christianity Today just launched new multimedia project titled “This is Our City” to spotlight the ways that Christians are working toward holistic peace in their cities.
