Family Time in the Mountains: Why It’s Worth Every Second

This past weekend, my family and I spent a couple of days in Estes Park, and let me tell you—it was the recharge we didn’t know we needed. As soon as we stepped out of the car, it felt like the stress we’d been carrying around started to melt away. And although our time there wasn’t flawless (because what family trip ever is?), it was a powerful reminder of why getting out into the mountains is so important.

In Colorado, we’re lucky to have the mountains as our backyard. Even though daily life can get busy with work, chores, and family responsibilities, sometimes you just have to make time for a quick escape. Whether it’s a weekend or just a few hours, there’s something about being in nature that can hit a reset button in your mind.

The Power of Nature for Family Bonding

On one of the days, we went for a hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. Was it perfect? No. Did our kids whine about the uphill stretches? Absolutely. But it was still life-giving. It’s these kinds of imperfect moments that make family time special. The scenery, the fresh air, and the time away from screens and routines—it all combined to give us a shared experience that we’ll talk about for months to come.

There’s something about the mountains that changes the dynamic for everyone. My kids seemed to be more present, and even though they didn’t realize it at the time, I could see the benefits. They explored, got some energy out, and made memories that I hope stick with them for a long time. I’ve come to believe that getting out of the house and into nature is one of the most powerful things you can do as a family. It breaks the cycle of stress, distraction, and busyness that’s so easy to get trapped in.

Imperfect Is Perfect

Here’s the thing: trips like this are never going to be perfect. You’ll leave something behind. You’ll have arguments over which snacks to bring. Someone will inevitably lose a glove or whine halfway through the hike. But that’s not the point. The point is that you’re out there. You’re creating moments, even small ones, that will stick with your kids and become part of their childhood memories.

And honestly, those moments don’t have to be epic. You don’t need a perfect Instagram-worthy adventure every time you head out. Some of the best family trips are the messy, chaotic, and unplanned ones. It’s about giving yourself and your family that space to reconnect, recharge, and just be.

The Soft Reset Button

Even if you’re not able to go out for an entire weekend, don’t underestimate the power of a small break. Whether it’s a day trip, a quick hike, or even just an afternoon outside, getting out into nature is like pressing a soft reset button for your family. It can make all the difference in your mental and emotional well-being. Sure, the to-do list may still be waiting for you when you get home, but those things can wait. Time with your family is more important, and it’s these small experiences that build the foundation of family life.

Just Plan It and Go

The biggest lesson I’ve learned over the years is this: you’ve got to plan it and just go. The to-do list will always be there. There will always be something that needs doing at home. But taking the time to plan a trip into the mountains—even if it’s just for a day—gives you and your family something more valuable than a clean house or a finished list of chores. It gives you time together.
