The Simplicity of Walking
I have been walking now for over 30 years but have finally realized the simplicity of it. We have one family car so my commute becomes more creative. This week I tried walking the two miles to work and loved it. Gone are the stresses of driving in traffic and getting annoyed with other drivers. Walking is simple and relaxing. It gave me over a half an hour to focus on my day and notice what I missed as I quickly drove to work. Walking home was even better. I had time to reflect on the day and when I got home to my girls I was able to be much more present with them.
I wonder why we live so far from where we work and go to school. The average commute for Americans seems to be around fifteen miles. This definitely is not within walking distance. How much simpler would our lives be if we lived within walking distance of our work, schools and shopping? I wonder if we would be less stressed out if we didn’t have to commute like cattle through the crowded highways. For myself, I am just thankful that I live close enough to my workplace that I can walk.
