Vacation from the Kids

We love our kids dearly but after ten years of marriage, we knew we needed to get away and take a longer vacation without the kids. Hillary and I have gone on a couple vacations just the two of us for a day or so but never for almost a week. After watching the hilarious movie “Couples Retreat” about four couples who go away for a couples only retreat, we talked to some other couples about having a couples retreat of our own.

So last week Hillary and I along with two other couples, the Moser’s and the Lusk’s, who moved to Denver with us after college, left the kids behind and flew to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. We stayed at the adults only section of the Majestic Elegance Resort and loved every minute of it. It was awesome to just relax and not worry about a thing except finding beach towels in the morning. There were times that Hillary and I didn’t want to read because that entailed actually doing something.

All of us were celebrating our ten year anniversaries and it was so interesting to look back over the last ten years together and think through our marriage highs and lows. Hillary and I spent time thinking back over the last ten years and remembering how God has shaped our story together. Having just settled back in Denver, it was also fun to think about the future and what God might do in and through us over the next ten years. Each of us has kids around the same ages and so thinking through parenting over the next ten years was a mixture of excitement and stress. In the next ten years our kids will be teenagers!

Hillary and I are excited for what God will do in and through us over the next ten years. If we have learned anything over the last ten, we know that we have to be open and available for whatever God has in store. We are thankful for what he has taught us and how he has orchestrated our steps. We are thankful for great friends like the Moser’s and Lusk’s who were alongside us for the formative first years of marriage and who have stayed in touch even across many miles.¬†And we are thankful for a great vacation away from the kids and we were so excited to get our girls back in the house so our lives could return to normal.

Now it’s on the to the next adventure of investing in our neighborhood here in Edgewater, Colorado and seeing God reveal himself to our community!
